April Home Checklist: Spring Cleaning & Refreshing Your Space

With longer days and warmer weather, April is the perfect month to tackle some essential home maintenance—both indoors and out. Here’s a quick guide to help you keep your home in top shape this season.

Keep Off the Grass

If you’re aiming for the greenest lawn in the neighbourhood, resist the urge to walk on it during April. This month is often filled with rain, which can soften the soil and make your grass more prone to root damage when trampled. In fact, “Keep Off the Grass Day” lands on April 21, reminding us how important it is to minimize foot traffic to maintain a healthy lawn.

Mid-April is also a great time to apply your first round of fertilizer, once you see new growth. While outside, check your driveway or walkways for cracks, as the freeze-thaw cycle over winter can cause damage. And don’t forget to inspect sprinklers and lawn mowers to ensure everything’s in working order.

Check Your Window Wells

Window wells keep basement windows free from moisture damage, but they tend to collect leaves, dirt, and other debris over the fall and winter. Clearing out that gunk in April ensures water can drain properly when spring rains arrive. It’s not the most glamorous chore—and it’s often done in tight quarters—but it’s essential to prevent potential flooding.

While you’re in window mode, consider washing windows and cleaning screens that have accumulated dirt over the winter. Clearer views and improved airflow are an added perk!

Time for an Oven Deep-Clean

Cleaning the oven might be one of the least-loved household tasks, but April’s mild weather helps make it more bearable. You can open the windows to air out strong fumes, whether you’re using heavy-duty oven cleaners or running the self-clean cycle.

If you prefer avoiding harsh chemicals, baking soda and vinegar are a powerhouse team. Baking soda’s gentle abrasiveness pairs perfectly with vinegar’s acidity to cut through grease and grime without scratching surfaces. It’s a safe, effective option that won’t break the bank—and you’ll love the results.
