November’s Home Maintenance Checklist

November Home Maintenance Checklist for Milton Homeowners

November in Canada can be unpredictable—one day it’s mild and sunny, and the next you’re scraping frost off your windshield. It’s a transitional month where fall starts giving way to winter, and that means it’s the perfect time to get your home ready for the colder months (and the holiday season, too).

Here’s your simple November home maintenance checklist:

🔔 Test Fire & Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Daylight Savings is a handy reminder to check your smoke and CO alarms. Swap out batteries, check expiration dates, and ensure they’re working properly.

Why it matters:

  • Dead or missing batteries are one of the top reasons smoke alarms fail.

  • Many house fires start at night, and smoke can put people into a deeper sleep instead of waking them up.

  • Carbon monoxide is silent, invisible, and deadly—yet more than 50 people die from CO poisoning every year in Canada.

And remember—Ontario law requires working smoke alarms on every floor and a CO alarm near all sleeping areas.

🌬 Replace Your Furnace Filter

Colder weather means your furnace is putting in more work. Swapping out the filter now:

  • Improves indoor air quality

  • Reduces allergens

  • Helps your furnace run more efficiently

Most filters are located near the furnace’s blower system—usually at the front near the bottom. If you haven’t changed it in a while, November is the time.

🚰 Shut Off Exterior Hose Bibs

Frozen pipes are a winter nightmare. Avoid them by shutting off and draining your exterior hose bibs:

  1. Close the interior shut-off valve.

  2. Open the exterior valve to let any leftover water out.

  3. Disconnect and drain any hoses, then store them indoors where they won’t freeze.

Doing this now will save you from costly burst pipes later.

Seasonal maintenance doesn’t just protect your home—it helps it run more efficiently and avoids big repair bills down the road.

Thinking about selling your home this winter or in the spring? 🏡 A well-maintained home makes a better impression on buyers. Reach out to to the KT Team at 1-800-617-0090 to learn more about our exclusive services.
