December’s Monthly Checklist

December is here, and it’s a whirlwind of holiday cheer, winter prep, and endless to-do lists. But amidst all the festivities, don’t forget that winter brings its own challenges—especially when it comes to keeping your home and family safe.

Here’s your ultimate winter survival checklist, with tips to help you breeze through the season like a pro.

1. Stock Up on Your Winter Emergency Kit

Living in Canada means winter is full of surprises—think snowstorms, ice storms, and those lovely power outages. If you don’t already have a home emergency kit, now’s the time to get one ready.

Here’s your shopping list for peace of mind:

  • Batteries
  • Flashlight (bonus points for a cute, colourful one!)
  • Candles and matches (for light and ambiance)
  • First-aid kit (because accidents happen)
  • Solar or hand-crank cell phone charger (stay connected no matter what)
  • Battery-operated radio (old-school but reliable)

Pro tip: While you’re at it, check your car emergency kit too. A cozy blanket and some snacks wouldn’t hurt either!

2. Fire Safety First: Don’t Let the Holidays Go Up in Smoke

Did you know December is prime time for home fires? Candles, fireplaces, and Christmas trees are the usual suspects but don’t worry—staying fire-safe is easier than you think.

  • Real Christmas Trees: Love the smell of a real tree? Same. But make sure it’s fresh, water it daily, and keep it at least a meter away from heat sources like fireplaces, candles, or space heaters.
  • Twinkling Lights: Use indoor-rated lights with no frayed wires or broken bulbs. Check that extension cords and power bars are in good condition, and don’t overload those outlets!
  • Candles: Nothing says cozy like candlelight, but never leave them unattended. Keep them far from anything flammable (including that Instagram-worthy tree).

And don’t forget about your trusty fire extinguisher! Make sure it’s charged, not expired, and that everyone knows where to find it.

3. Clear Your Driveways and Walkways Like a Pro

Nobody wants to do the winter shuffle over icy sidewalks. Keep your driveways and walkways safe and slip-free by stocking up on sand or de-icer.

Skip the salt!
Sure, salt is effective, but it’s also a major troublemaker:

  • Salt cracks asphalt and concrete,
  • it wreaks havoc on lawns and plants, and
  • It will hurt your pets’ paws (and can make them sick if they lick it off).

Instead, go for sand or gravel. They’re cheaper, eco-friendly, and way less damaging. Your driveway, plants, and furry friends will thank you.

Let’s Make This Winter the Coziest (and Safest) Yet

Winter might throw some challenges your way, but with these simple tips, you’ll be ready for anything. Whether staying warm during a storm or preventing fire hazards, a little prep goes a long way. You can check out more safety tips during the holidays here!
